As Christmas approaches, it’s time to think about important seasonal topics such as gifts, trees, stockings and, of course, Elf on the Shelf! This holiday activity brings lots of joy to families, but it can also be a headache to find new ones. Elf ideas on the shelf almost every day. Luckily, we’ve got 85 awesome ideas to share, so whether it’s your very first year of setting up the elf, or you’ve been doing it for years, you can take inspiration from our list.

In our house, we got involved in this popular activity thanks to a fun friend who gave my daughter her own elf on the shelf. Being an older child, we’ve read the accompanying book together countless times, and my daughter often takes it upon herself to dress the elf up and move him to various places in our house. Plus, the elf hangs out with us all year round. Kind of a fun twist on the idea behind the elf on a shelf, but the creativity brought him a lot of happiness.

What’s the “real story” behind the elf on the shelf?

The elf on the shelf is actually magical, able to watch over the children every day and report to Santa every night. The trick is that this elf moves to a new place every day, and when the children wake up they run around the house looking for where the elf has moved.

Elf on the Shelf was originally a poem written in 2004. The following year, in 2005, it was put into a self-published mother-daughter book, written by Carol Aebersold and her daughter, Chanda Bell. The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition is based on their family’s Scandinavian holiday tradition that began in the 1970s. story of Santa Claus.

But in 2007, Elf on the Shelf started to really gain popularity. So what has changed? In November 2007, there was a photograph of Jennifer Garner with an Elf on the Shelf box in New York. In December, the Today’s show ran a segment on the elf. And the rest is the story of happy holidays.

How do we start doing Elf on the Shelf?

Now we can all be part of the Aebersold tradition. Select the elf of your choice and set some ground rules for the kids. In addition to the book and the elf, give your elf on the shelf their own style by choosing from a variety of clothes and accessories. And then start showcasing it in various places around your home (doing as many hilarious things as you can!) throughout the holidays. It’s the season for fun!
