Fourth generation family business Stephens Bakery, headquartered in Dunfermline, employs 240 people, has 14 retail stores and six snack delivery vehicles and operates a number of local bakery partnerships with Co-op, Scotmid , McColl’s and independent retailers.

Stephens has a team of over 100 bakers who prepare all of its products every day, including its flagship lines: morning rolls and steak bridies. This is a far cry from his humble beginnings as a small bakery in his hometown.

The company’s recent history is exemplary of how artisan bakery businesses have responded to the challenges of Covid-19. The company entered the pandemic without selling online and came out with a turnover of over £ 950,000. According to the judges, this reflected Stephens Bakery’s spirit of innovation, teamwork and loyal customer base, showing that she “really went the extra mile”.

Managing Director Andre Sarafilovic says the bakery is “humble and privileged” to serve its local regions, and the company’s community efforts have stood out to the judges. The range of quality handcrafted products, manufactured to “a very high standard”, also won the jury’s approval.

The judges judged Stephens to be an exceptional artisan bakery, with the jury unanimously awarding the company high marks in key assessment areas including employee training and development, the current and expected growth of the company, product range, craftsmanship and product quality.

Supplying catering and grocery businesses – as well as its sister neighborhood bakeries in London, Brighton, Oxford and Cambridge under the Gail’s brand – The Bread Factory was founded in 1993.

The wide range of products made from the company’s London base include bespoke artisan breads, morning goods, pastries, cakes, sweets, desserts and crackers. The judges were impressed with the high quality of the bakery’s production, as well as the skill base of the team used to make the products.

The company expresses a “deep conviction” that if it prepares “a range of delicious and high quality baked goods, our customers will find products to suit them”.

This was reflected in the team’s pride in finishing products by hand, which caught the panel’s attention, as well as the successful expansion and growth of the company.

Finalist: Mimi’s Bakehouse

Edinburgh-based Mimi’s Bakehouse recently reached 11 years of business. Owner Michelle Phillips – aka Mimi – opened her first store in Leith in November 2010 and since then has expanded her estate with outlets at Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, City Art Center and Lauriston Castle.

A true family affair, Phillips works in the company with her husband, three daughters and son-in-law. In addition to shops, the bakery has pop-up vans that travel to events and locations outside of Edinburgh, and the company also delivers throughout the UK via orders on its website.

When the judges visited Mimi’s Bakehouse, the quality and taste of the products were rated as “exemplary”, along with the skill, passion and dedication shown by all the staff.
