CHERRY HILL, NJ — Jon Perper, owner of Erlton Craft Bar & Kitchen, says his secret to staying in business for more than 60 years is his company’s ability to adapt to customers’ wants and needs.
What started as a bowling alley has since evolved into an entertainment center that can host a variety of special events with plenty of freshly prepared food and a variety of drinks available for purchase, he said.
“My father opened a bowling center in Cherry Hill in the 1960s called Woodcrest Lanes and I worked there for many, many years,” Perper said in an interview. “In 1981, we replaced it with the Super Bowl.”
In the 1980s, the family business at 1536 Kings Highway North became the Playdrome and Entertainment Center. According to Perper, the name change came with new options for guests, such as an arcade, ping-pong table and shuffleboard.
“I could see that customers still wanted our style of entertainment products,” he said. But they wanted to do this [activities] in a quieter way…I wanted to be able to use
the facility for events, parties or family outings,” he said.
In 2015, the company added space for special events to its location and became known as The Big Event, he said.
“We knew that [we] need to have a restaurant in the facility. And it was always a bit difficult because there are a lot of levels [of food]“, explained Perper.
The snack bar has been discontinued and a menu including freshly prepared seasonal American fare with plenty of sharing items, flatbreads, kids’ meals, desserts, craft beers, seasonal craft cocktails and wine has been added. been added, he said.
Funeral luncheons, corporate dinners, birthday parties, fundraising events, bachelor and bachelorette parties are just some of the many special events that can be held at one of the three private event rooms at the venue, according to Perper.
The venue, now known as Erlton Craft Bar & Kitchen, now also offers table tennis, shuffleboard, bingo nights as well as fantasy sports leagues, and the venue frequently hosts live entertainment, did he declare.
