Daily Harvest 2022’s New Organic Ready-to-Cook Menu: Review

Many people decide to improve their cooking skills when January rolls around, but as the schedules fill up and meal preparation falls on the priority list, this New Year’s resolution is easily overlooked. To start 2022 on a high note, Daily harvest just launched new menu offerings to help people cook quality food with little to no effort – and I’ve been lucky enough to try them all.

Daily Harvest’s new Harvest Bakes are ready-to-bake meals filled with nutrient-dense veggies and fibrous ingredients, and they take about as long to prepare as a frozen dinner you might buy at the grocery store. They will also help you start the New Year on a lasting note: generally, plant-based diets are environmentally friendly, and this line of organic food is grown without pesticides or other potentially harmful chemicals. In addition, these meals are delivered in recyclable packaging, which further reduces their environmental impact.

I started with the Squash Gratin + Wild Rice for a little American touch. This solanacea-free dish features a blend of delicata squash, red cabbage, cranberry seeds and Brussels sprouts served over wild rice and lentils with a parsnip and thyme sauce drizzled with a drizzle.

Instructions are printed clearly on the side of each package, and there are only four steps involved. First, set your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, then remove the sleeve from the packaging and remove the plastic cover. Place the frozen Harvest Bake on the oven rack and bake for 22 to 27 minutes, stirring halfway through. When done, let it cool for a minute or two, then dig!

The first course did not disappoint as its robust flavors paired well. The sweetness of the squash mixed with salty elements like rice and Brussels sprouts to form a full-bodied bite that brought me back to Thanksgiving. Likewise, the Chickpea curry + coconut had a good balance of flavors because the milder ingredients like sweet potatoes and green chickpeas cut through some of the spices including turmeric, cumin, and chili. This one was my favorite: As someone who often uses red chili flakes and chili powder in my cooking, this dish brought some heat.

Paleo-friendly and allergen-free Cremini + Smoked Paprika Ropa Vieja, meanwhile, is a Cuban-inspired dish with mushrooms, kale, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, plantains, and kohlrabi (a variety of turnip), all served with a tomato sauce and Red bell pepper. The seeds added a solid crunch to every bite, and the plantains sweetened the naturally bitter flavor of the kale.

A past review of Daily Harvest has been the portion sizes, which are designed to reduce food waste. But the company has been listening, and the Harvest Bakes are considerably larger than its other offerings, perfect for a whole meal or as a side dish for two or more. For example, the Giant Bean + Olio Artichoke is as filling as they come. This Italian meal has flavors and textures similar to a spinach and artichoke dip, combining buttery giant beans with artichokes in a creamy sauce similar to Alfredo, but made with mashed cauliflower, garlic, yeast and chickpeas. To me it looked like a cheese treat; it even includes “breadcrumbs” with hemp for added flavor and fullness.
