In a recent Appetite publication, a survey found that many people eat the same breakfast every day. While a morning mantra can be heartwarming, this redundancy can be problematic. Of course, a morning smoothie, bowl, or other dish can be easy to prepare or sear when drowsiness persists. But, doesn’t a day deserve a little break from the monotony?

When a new year begins, many people seek to promote healthy food choices. From preparing meals to a fully stocked refrigerator, many people seek to be well prepared to keep these food choices on track. While all of the prep is helpful, sometimes it can make people crave more. Shouldn’t there be a better way?

Dole thinks morning routines don’t have to be the same as a morning rut. With an abundance of bananas, berries, pineapples, and various other fresh fruits, there’s no excuse for not having a tasty variety on your plate.

Dole Kids with almond toast

While parents don’t always want kids to play with their food, this delicious breakfast recipe does bring some fun to the mix. Turning toast into a fun picture ensures kids will have extra fruit on the plate.

Why not turn this breakfast into a discussion table. Ask the children to explain their choices. Did they choose a fruit for color or flavor? What other ingredients would make this toast prettier, tastier or just plain nicer. Why not make a toast bar and turn that idea into a breakfast meal to remember.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of wholemeal bread
  • 6 tablespoons of unsalted almond butter
  • 2 teaspoons of honey, optional
  • 1 DOLE® banana, peeled
  • 2 DOLE strawberries, trimmed and halved
  • 4 pieces (1-1 / 2 inch) fresh DOLE Tropical Gold® pineapple
  • 2 DOLE Blackberries
  • 2 teaspoons of roasted flax seeds

  • Toast slices of bread. Spread with almond butter and drizzle with honey if desired.
  • Make the Dole Kids: cut 8 slices and 32 banana sticks. Arrange a strawberry half and a pineapple piece on two slices of toast and arrange the remaining strawberry halves and blackberries on the remaining slices. Place a “head” banana slice on top of each fruit and arrange 4 banana matches around each child for the arms and legs. Sprinkle flax seeds along the bottom edge of the toast, under the Dole children’s feet.

Sweet potato and banana pancakes

Who doesn’t love a little snack drizzled with maple syrup. Why not add a little extra to this pancake mix. With this recipe from Dole, traditional pancakes have both fruits and vegetables in one serving. Everyone will ask for a second serving.

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium DOLE sweet potato, peeled and cut into ½ inch pieces (about 10 ounces)
  • 1 DOLE banana, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 cup of oat milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup of oatmeal
  • 1 tablespoon of baking powder
  • 1½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • ¼ cup 100% pure maple syrup
  • ¼ cup whipped coconut topping
  • ¼ cup chopped toasted pecans

  • Add potato and 2 tablespoons of water to medium microwave-safe bowl; cover with plastic wrap, leaving one edge open for ventilation, and microwave on high power for 8 minutes or until very tender. Puree bananas, milk and potato mixture in a food processor on high power until smooth; add the egg and mash until blended. Transfer the banana mixture to a large bowl. Makes about 3 cups.
  • Whisk flour, baking powder and cinnamon in medium bowl; stir into banana mixture, stirring until combined.
  • Heat a griddle or large nonstick skillet over medium heat; spray lightly with non-stick cooking spray. Pour ¼ cup batter per pancake on a heated griddle; cook 2 minutes or until air bubbles form and underside is a uniform golden color. Flip the pancakes; cook 2 minutes or until underside is golden brown. Repeat with remaining batter, spraying griddle with nonstick cooking spray as needed. Makes 12 pancakes.
  • Serve pancakes topped with syrup, whipped topping and pecans.
