EatBeat: Applebee’s offers a wide selection of seats and menu items – Grand Forks Herald

GRAND FORKS — With its “Welcome to the Neighborhood” theme, Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar has long been a staple in the south end of Grand Forks.

The restaurant is a convenient place to meet for lunch. In the afternoon, it’s a place where people meet to eat and chat. And evening diners include those looking for steaks, ribs, chicken, and seafood.

My trips to Applebee’s are often inspired by my craving for a late lunch and an order of Oriental Chicken Salad ($12.79). This salad is a longtime favorite with Asian greens, rice noodles and almonds tossed in a dressing. It was also the choice of my daughter, Gail Hagerty (GH) who came from Bismarck.

Our server told us his name was Logan. He is cool and collected in his work. Although he is comfortable in his job, there are “hiring now” signs around. And the restaurant, like others, is struggling to find enough waiters. Nick Eley, the manager of 15 years, says the staffing isn’t too bad, but he says it’s been a struggle. It employs dozens of students, all part-time. The highest paid can earn up to $18 per hour. And he said service was usually over by 10 p.m.

Seating at Applebee is nice with booths around exterior windows and generally a choice of area for customers. Many have their favorite stalls. The parking lot is large.

Delivery and takeout make up about 38% of Applebee’s business, according to the manager. He notes the cost of doing business when many people go to the lakes during the summer months. But he says people are still ordering and drinking. There was more business on Father’s Day. And he thinks there will be more people with welcoming activities for the new school year at UND.

Steaks, ribs, chicken, seafood, salad and pasta are featured on Applebee’s menus. The varied menu offers choices for groups.

For those who don’t have to count calories, desserts await. One of them is a triple chocolate fusion with 840 calories for $6.49.

Others are moderate, like a bite of brownie with ice cream for $1.59.
