Upon learning that Elvis Presley had asked his longtime love, Priscilla, to be his wife, Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis’ manager, threw a wedding ceremony and reception fit for a king. The couple exchanged vows at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas in an approximately eight-minute civil ceremony performed by Nevada Supreme Court Justice David Zenoff.
The couple’s reception was a lavish affair with a champagne buffet breakfast. However, it also contained the weirdest food combination for an early morning event.
In 1966, Elvis asked Priscilla the question.
After six years of dating, Elvis popped the question to Priscilla with a ring that featured a stunning 3.6-carat solitaire diamond surrounded by a row of smaller diamonds. Memphis jeweler Harry Levitch designed the ring.
“It was very relaxed,” Priscilla told Becky Yanky. Yanky worked as Elvis’ private secretary. She is also the author of My life with Elvis, reported Vogue magazine.
More importantly, Priscilla noted to Yanky, “He just told me about the ring one day and asked if I wanted to marry him. “More than ever,” I tell him.
The couple married on May 1, 1967.
Elvis’ witnesses were Joe Esposito and Marty Lacker.
Priscilla’s bridesmaid was her sister, Michelle.
The entertainer wore a fashionable black cashmere silk brocade tuxedo for the formal affair.
Priscilla designed her dress, a white chiffon dress with seed bead trim and a beaded yoke.
Subsequently, atop her beehive hairstyle was a rhinestone crown attached to a short veil.
Elvis and Priscilla’s reception was an extravagant breakfast buffet that doubled as a press conference
The couple toasted their new life with champagne.
A menu of the following foods followed, including fried chicken, roast suckling pig, Rockefeller oysters, clams, ham and eggs, poached salmon and lobster.
However, this extravagant menu was served at 9am. Brides Magazine.
Likewise, before the reception could begin, Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis’ longtime manager, arranged for the couple to give a press conference.
Elvis and Priscilla then answered questions and posed for news and photographs.
After that, the newly married couple joined 100 guests seated at 10 round tables for a champagne breakfast. This meal would have been served as a buffet at the hotel.
Elvis and Priscilla’s wedding cake cost $3,200
The stunning six-tiered yellow sponge cake was five feet tall. It was then filled with apricot marmalade and liqueur flavored cream.
As reported by people magazine, Aladdin Hotel pastry chef Denis Martig spoke about the iconic cake.
“Each layer was garnished twice with apricot marmalade and a Kirsch [liqueur] flavored Bavarian cream… iced with fondant icing and decorated with royal icing and marzipan roses,” he explained.
Additionally, the couple hosted a second wedding reception at Graceland for those excluded from their Las Vegas wedding day.
Elvis and Priscilla welcomed their only child, Lisa Marie Presley, exactly nine months after their wedding on February 1, 1968.
Also, after six years of marriage, Priscilla filed for divorce and their union officially ended in 1973.
Elvis died four years later in August 1977. Priscilla never remarried.
