The family and friends of Maria Bailey, “tea mistress” at Northern Tea House in Juneau, are asking the community for help. Bailey was evacuated to Anchorage on September 18 after suddenly collapsing when her store closed.
At the hospital, it was discovered that Bailey had undergone a thoracic aortic dissection and needed two emergency surgeries. Due to COVID-19 protocols in place, visitors are restricted, but Juneau’s family members have connected with the care team and received regular updates.
Maria Bailey’s sister-in-law Tasha Bailey said Maria is now in a physiotherapy and recovery unit.
“She responded to verbal commands and gave a thumbs up,” Tasha Bailey said.
However, the prognosis and timing of her recovery is currently unknown. For this reason, family and friends are organizing a fundraiser this weekend to help offset medical bills.
“It all started when we are having a dessert auction. Everyone loves desserts, ”said Tasha Bailey. “And so I reached out to a lot of our local businesses and they graciously donated dessert and then word got out and people asked to do more… and so because it got so big we got it.” moved to an online auction. “
This weekend’s fundraiser is one of many efforts by family and friends to raise and manage funds for Maria’s expenses. Tasha Bailey says she is grateful for all the help.
“You know, that’s why we live in this community because they show their support to their community members and their local businesses,” said Tasha Bailey.
The virtual dessert and silent auction Benefiting Maria’s Recovery will take place this Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Participants can bid and donate online, or visit the Northern Tea House at 9310 Glacier Highway to view the items in person.
Maria Bailey is also part of the team that produces KTOO’s “Culture Rich Conversations” series on Juneau’s Afternoon. Along with other members of the Black Awareness Association of Juneau, Maria helped host, facilitate, edit and book guests for the show.
