Hanai: new autumn family menu

Hanai (1590 Commercial Drive), Commercial Drive’s destination for warm Hawaiian-style dining, is launching a new multi-course ‘Ohana Menu meant to be shared with your friends, family and loved ones. Available now, diners are treated to a variety of rotating seasonal dishes, all inspired by chef Tess Bevernage’s childhood growing up in Hawai’i and traveling the Pacific Northwest.

“We opened Hanai to bring something unique to the table, a restaurant that represents the comforting and nourishing meals that Tom and I enjoyed growing up on O’ahu, as well as dishes that truly speak to our sense of belonging to Vancouver”, says Bevernage, who opened Hanai with partner Tom Robillard, Miki Ellis and Stephen Whiteside in March 2022. “Our ‘Ohana fixed menu allows our guests to taste a bit of everything, like enjoying a big family dinner at home.”

Hanai’sOhana Menu ($60 per person) offers four courses (each with many courses) and changes with farm-fresh linens. Each meal includes a variety of delicious snacks, a hearty salad, a seafood dish, several proteins to enjoy over crunchy homemade sesame furikake rice, and a sweet treat for dessert. Some ingredients Bevernage has been raving about lately, which customers can find on her menu, include wild local seaweed from Vancouver Island and sansho and nasturtiums that grow on Hanai’s garden patio.

Customers can pre-order the ‘Ohana menu on line. A limited number are also available for walk-in customers.

“It’s been really special to develop our ‘Ohana menu and grow the business from what was previously a simple take-out concept under the name Hanai Family Table to the full Hanai restaurant experience,” adds Beverage. “We were able to experiment with more gorgeous local ingredients, more flavors and really showcase our version of home-style Hawaiian cooking. Working with Miki and Stephen with their talent for wine and sake has been a dream to see them pair things with our food. My favorite right now has to be Catherine and Pierre Breton’s Cabernet Franc Rosé ‘La Ritournelle’.

Hanai is open Thursday through Monday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Reservations are recommended. Welcome without an appointment.
