Everywhere we turn we are faced with shared treats at work, parties, and food-focused family gatherings, and while it’s impossible to avoid all the delicious specialties, we can make changes. to make things healthier. Owners Maribel and Roman Monjaraz are committed to adding healthier options to their menu and are proud to be part of the Blue Zones movement in Monterey County.

The Blue Zones Project is a community-wide wellness improvement initiative aimed at making healthy choices easier for everyone in the community. The blue areas started out as a New York Times National Geographic Fellow Dan Buettner’s bestseller and has now grown into a global movement that inspires people to live longer and more actively with lower rates of chronic disease. From Sardinia, Italy, to Okinawa, Japan, passing through Loma Linda, California, people lead vibrant and active lives of up to hundreds. Buettner calls these areas the blue areas, and they are the inspiration behind his book, The blue zones: lessons for living longer from the people who have lived the longest. Buettner’s research, along with a longevity study, has led to a program that helps us live longer, healthier, and happier lives.

Blue Zones has identified nine ways that can help achieve these goals: Finding Ways to Move More, Having a Purpose in Life, Finding Ways to Relieve Stress, Stop Eating When You’re 80% Full, Go on a Diet. herbal, enjoy a glass of wine with good friends every day, participate in a faith community, invest time with your family, and surround yourself with supportive people.

Blue Zones Project Monterey County works to involve businesses, schools, restaurants, grocery stores, faith-based organizations and others in this community effort to reduce rates of obesity, smoking, and chronic disease in order to create a healthier, happier place to live, work and play. Part of this includes listing restaurants that are committed to providing healthier options on their menus.

And this is where restaurants like Gordon’s Café and Catering play a key role. The idea is to make it easier for people to make the healthier choice. With that in mind, we’ve challenged Chef Roman to make a delicious holiday dessert that even kids will love. He came up with Pumpkin Tapioca – a sweet concoction using seasonal flavors. It can be served hot or cold, although Roman says the flavors are more intense once the pudding has cooled. Our kid taste testers loved it. The Magana brothers told us it was creamy and refreshing and tasted like pumpkin ice cream. And they ate it all – a sure sign that they liked it. Chef Roman says most recipes can be changed to make them healthier and for home cooks who may be intimidated, he says the easiest thing to do is go online. Roman says there is a plethora of cooking videos that will show you exactly what to do. We’ve included Chef Roman’s recipe for pumpkin tapioca and a few other healthy ideas for your festive table.
