OAKLAND, CALIF. – Renewal Mill, a supplier of recycled ingredients, has partnered with ice cream maker Salt & Straw to develop a new, non-dairy flavored, chocolate salted caramel cupcake.
Available for a limited time, the frozen dessert has an oat base with sea salt, salted caramel frosting and dark chocolate cupcake brownie pieces. The cupcakes are made with Renewal Mill’s Dark Chocolate Brownie Mix, made with organic okara flour produced from soy pulp generated during processing of soy milk.
“According to cutting-edge research, approximately 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted each year, much of which ends up in landfills and contributes to climate change,” said Caroline Cotto, co-founder of Renewal Mill. “By improving the efficiency of our food system, Renewal Mill is helping to ensure that the next generation of eaters have a healthy planet and a sustainable future. Upcycling is about respect: respecting all the resources that go into the cultivation and production of our food, and the people who make it. We’re honored to partner with Salt & Straw and help not only raise awareness of food loss and climate-friendly food options, but also to prove that sustainable food doesn’t sacrifice taste.
Tyler Malek, co-founder and chief ice cream maker at Salt & Straw, described Renewal Mill’s products as “revolutionary thoughtful, as well as downright delicious.”
“Their brownie mix is really, really good,” he said. “We simply make this mixture, brush it with a homemade vegan caramel frosting and nail it in an oat milk ice cream to create one of the most delicious desserts you’ve ever tasted … vegan or no.”
The product can be purchased online at the Salt & Straw website and at Salt & Straw spoon stores.
