State gives $2.7 million to county businesses through back-to-business grants

SPRINGFIELD — More than 70 Madison County businesses will share more than $2.7 million in the sixth and final round of Back to Business COVID-19 Recovery Grants.

On Wednesday, Governor JB Pritzker and officials from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) announced that the statewide distribution of $250 million in relief funds through the Back to Business (B2B) program had been granted.

The awards wrap up the state program that has provided nearly 6,500 grants to small businesses in more than 475 cities.

“When we get our state’s finances in order, we can invest taxpayer dollars in building a stronger Illinois for all who call it home,” Pritzker said.

“Illinois has responded to the pandemic by providing $1.5 billion in economic relief to child care providers, local government departments, and so many hard-hit small businesses that shape our communities,” he said. he declared. “These are investments that preserve jobs, main streets and dreams.”

The program used funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) to help small businesses rehire staff, cover operating costs, provide additional security measures for customers, and cover other expenses necessary to recover from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Grants were awarded to applicants on an ongoing basis with dollar amounts ranging from $5,000 to $150,000, based on a percentage of each company’s losses during the pandemic.

According to the DCEO, 29% of this round of grantees applied for the Business Interruption Grant (BIG) program last year but did not receive funding. Sixty-one percent of the awards went to industries hard hit by the pandemic, such as restaurants, taverns, hotels, arts organizations and salons.

To reach the businesses most in need, DCEO uses a community navigator program of more than 100 local organizations who have helped raise awareness of the program and provide technical support to businesses in hard-hit areas, rural communities and other hard-to-reach areas. reach the people.
