The weakest link in the offerings of many fast food chains receives special attention in the chicken-focused restaurant.
Last week, yum! Brands (YUM) – Get yum! Report Brands Inc.‘s Taco Bell has upped the ante by partnering with Upscale New York Bakery Milk Bar for a strawberry bell truffle or, simply put, truffle-sized vanilla cake bites with strawberry chunks soaked in strawberry milk.
Did someone say banana cream?
An international restaurant brand (RSQ) – Get the report from Restaurant Brands International Inc. brand, Louisiana-style fried chicken chain Popeyes is known for having more desserts than many chains’ usual single shake.
In addition to the cinnamon apple pie currently on the menu, Popeyes has offered everything from Mardi Gras cheesecake to pumpkin pie and chocolate chip cookies as dessert over the years.
Foodies will be delighted to know that two other desserts will now be sold at Popeyes – while its base is a regular vanilla birthday cake, the Banana Cream Cake is topped with banana cream and Nilla wafer crumbs.
Priced at $2.99, Banana Cream Cake is a way to end a meal in one bite. In addition to dessert, Popeyes is also bringing back the chocolate donuts it launched in December 2020.
Donuts are bite-sized pastries filled with Hershey’s chocolate and sprinkled with so much sugar you’ll need ten napkins to mop them up.
“Being a New Orleans brand, Popeye’s knows a thing or two about donuts, and one thing is certain: they can be MESSY!” said the company when the donuts were first released in 2020. “A bite and powdered sugar are everywhere.”
In other words, don’t wear black pants when eating them.
Old fashioned meal deals
It seems like time for a menu change as Popeyes is also bringing back their Surf and Turf meal. The $7 combo includes the brand’s signature fried chicken sandwich and four pieces of Hushpuppy shrimp with a side of Creole cocktail sauce.
Popeyes is also bringing back the Hushpuppy Shrimp Meal – the $6 box of eight butterfly shrimp with a cookie, sauce and side dish was dropped from menus in 2016 to make way for other things.
This summer, those who order the meal through the Popeyes mobile app will also be able to get it for $5 instead of $6.
But those who love these items shouldn’t get too used to them as they are all limited time promotions that will only be available throughout the summer.
Expect to see more Popeyes overseas

After its fried chicken sandwich went viral and caused lineups in 2019, Popeyes is on a mission to create other products that will cause a similar sensation. The company is constantly testing new products through limited-time promotions. In an exclusive interview with TheStreet in May, Chairman Sami Siddiqui said that the process of adding a new full-time item to the menu can take three to five years.
“So we do a lot of research to understand who our guests are, what they want and even who aren’t our guests. People who don’t come to us as often, what do they want?” said Siddiqui. “[…] Once [our team] come[s] with things, it moves into sensory testing and eventually market testing and operational testing to see what kind of impact it will have on our franchisees and our bottom line.”
