This milestone is celebrated with a menu change with lots of new additions. Although originally known for offering the capital’s finest European classics such as Tomato Fish, Chicken kyiv, Stroganoff Mushroom, Coq au Vin and ‘Meunier’ Sole Fillets as well as traditional regional treasures (North Indian) and Oriental dishes, the new UCH Rewind’s menu continues this tradition through its elaborate selection of more than 400 dishes. Some of these unique recipes date back decades. The large selection of dishes, each created from recipes carefully curated and guarded over decades, has attracted a regular clientele that remains loyal to the brand over the years.

Kalra, the brand’s third-generation owner, says: “United Coffee House has seen subsequent generations of families visit the restaurant, whether for special occasions or just for a meal out, and they return with their children and grandchildren. -children. We’ve seen potential in-laws bond over dishes as they discuss marriage, and those same couples later return with their own children. I believe we remain popular as we keep everything from restaurant favorites like our tomato fish and sizzlers, to our wood-fired pizza, our wide selection of regional Indian dishes and a plethora of desserts, accompanied of wines and washed down with custom blends of tea.”

For Kalra, UCH Rewind is an amalgamation of classic kitchens from around the world presented with a contemporary twist. He attributes this to the great story behind the establishment. The flagship United Coffee House restaurant opened in Connaught Place, New Delhi in 1942, but it was in the late 1930s that Lala Hans Raj opened the novelty restaurant that became a sensation, named ‘Esplanade’, it was a 24-hour restaurant where Allied soldiers stationed in the capital ate and enjoyed their free time before leaving for the battlefields of World War II.
“In 1942, Lala Hans Raj, a man who appreciated the finer things in life as well as someone who knew a good thing when he saw one, ventured into a vaulted grocery store, cloistered among the colonnades of Connaught Place , and had a vision. Buying the store, Lala Hans Raj set about creating her idea of an idyllic cafe, a place where people of the world could gather to dine and converse.
This has been helped in large part by United Coffee House’s extensive and eclectic menu, which has brought together culinary delights from around the world so that everyone from anywhere in the world can find something to enjoy, whether it’s something familiar or something new. Perhaps equally important was the cafe’s offering of signature coffee blends, each reflecting a different time and place in the drink’s global history,” says Kalra.
He goes on to point out that while WWII American soldiers who dined at the Esplanade helped UCH perfect its American offerings, Hans Raj’s British son Gandharv Kumar ushered in its classic continental fare, introducing in Delhi now ubiquitous dishes such as the likes sizzle and grill.
United Coffee House is also responsible for popularizing Chinese and Japanese dishes. The original UCH holds a special place in Delhi’s culinary landscape, and UCH Rewind has made the brand even more accessible. Kalra candidly shares, “UCH Rewind is the company’s celebration of this heritage, providing every person in every geography and every generation of every family, a dining experience in a retro chic setting with timeless flavors.
The greatest pleasure of serving our customers is being able to order something for every generation of the family, no matter what their taste buds are craving. From meatier options to vegan, old classics to new takes, there’s something for everyone.
So whether it’s a cold beer and classic pub fare or staple meals from around the world, complemented by a bespoke coffee blend made just for you, UCH Rewind invites you to taste the best of classic kitchens in the most contemporary way.
UCH Rewind offers a wide range of items to choose from. Starting with soups and salads, you can move on to small plates to share and large plates to share. If the former allow you to taste many dishes at once without filling up, they also offer a unique and offbeat presentation. These are intended for large groups and those who wish to try multiple gastronomic experiences. Entrees range from tikkas to Chinese bites.
The selection known as “Signatures” will likely make you swoon with nostalgia. Kalra says with a smile, “They bring new meaning to the concept of ‘home-cooked meals served outside’. In the main course, one has a plethora of regional Indian choices ranging from Punjabi to Konkani and everything in between. There are Bowl meals that are friendly and served quickly, in addition to promoting group meals. Continental main courses include comforting classics like risotto, lasagna, pasta and sizzles, and more. The rewind takes on many culinary traditions and, due to colonial influences, the flavors section showcases delicious British club fare with comforting classics from Gymkhana, Cricket Club and others like pies. , rolls, cutlets, chops, schnitzels and more. Popular street food or what we call ‘chaat’ is closer to Indian cuisine in the flavor section, but again it represents various regions of India, for a wholesome experience. An all-day breakfast section with multiple egg dishes, waffles, and pancakes will also appeal to many. The dessert section is mouth-watering with classic baked Alaska, bruises, sundaes, gulab bomb, apple pie, and cheesecake, among others.
There are 50 kinds of tea and coffee blends offered, and one can also try unique cocktails like Royal Indian Fashion, Polo Collins, Bengal President Margarita etc. or signatures like Viceroy’s Toast, United Sazerac, The English Breakfast to name a few. . This ensures that all customers are spoiled for choice.
“At Rewind, we create experiences based on your memories – a place where you connect with the past but live in the present. United Coffee House has always been an experiential restaurant, a meeting place. UCH Rewind presents the same vibe and offers different experiences at different times of the day,” concludes Kalra.
