Rowan Adlington, who runs Figaro in Wingerworth, supports the Veganuary initiative which promotes the benefits of adopting a plant-based diet.
She said: “Given the climate emergency and the health benefits, awareness of the vegan lifestyle is accelerating. Documentaries and press articles urge us to save our planet by eating less meat, doing less shopping, cycling and recycling!
“The events of the past few years with unusual weather conditions, deforestation and of course Covid encourage people to take note and try to do their part to support our future, whether that is by having a few days without meat, by reducing traveling, buying charity shops, etc. Every little bit makes a difference and we all just have to do a little bit!
“Every year in January, more and more people try to introduce vegan foods into their diets. So we designed a new menu for January to tempt everyone and vouchers to encourage people to try us!
“Our vegetarian offers will change weekly to encourage you to try us at different times of the day and include: a free hot drink when you buy breakfast, free dessert when you buy lunch, a glass of wine or beer free when you buy an evening meal, a hot drink offered with the purchase of a cake! website where you can also view our full menu.

Rowan launched her vegan cafe, next to her Arkadia Too hair and beauty salon on Allendale Road, in the summer of 2021.
She admits the timing could have been better as the hospitality was just starting to reopen after a rough patch. Its café was due to open in 2020 but its opening was delayed by the Covid pandemic.
However, she was thrilled with the response to her new venture. She said: “We were delighted to see people traveling the long distances for good vegan food!” she said. “As a vegan it’s really hard to find a place to eat everything on the menu! It’s great to have a full menu to choose from if you avoid dairy or gluten and so refreshing that you don’t have to choose the one token vegan dish.
In addition to working in his hair salon, Rowan does a few shifts at the cafe. She said: “It’s a great working atmosphere and I love to make sure that all of our customers have the best experience when they visit! Variety is the spice of life!
“Le Figaro has a nice buzz and I’m so happy to have brought a warm and welcoming meeting place to the village that I love.
“I have a great team of people who work with me, few of whom are vegans or vegetarians but we all agree on one thing and that is that our food is delicious! Our coffee is single origin and comes from the Peru our cakes are baked locally and we use an Italian wholesaler to bring us the best quality ingredients for our pizza and pasta dishes.
“Our chef, Stephen Cameron, loves trying new specialties on top of our regular menu and has even started making his own artisan breads on site. “
Licensed to sell a carefully curated selection of wines, spirits and beers, Le Figaro offers a Mediterranean-inspired menu filled with pizza and pasta dishes, as well as cakes and sandwiches, and seats 32 customers.
Thursday quiz nights have been well attended while a few musical nights at the cafe have been such a success that Rowan plans to introduce monthly live events featuring musicians and comedians.
His plans for 2022 include expanding the take-out side of the business and increasing seating outside the cafe in Allendale Park.
Rowan, 54, said: “As a vegan and lover of great food and restaurants, it has been an amazing experience (and a lot of hard work) to create the wonderful space that is Figaro and I can’t wait to see where this the journey leads! I think there will be many challenges ahead in 2022 for the hospitality industry, but I hope that we will continue to grow and develop our customer base. “
Figaro is open for breakfast and lunch from Wednesday to Sunday and in the evening until 10:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
